If any one thing has fed my hallucinogenic optimism about working for LiveIntent, it’s how we fit into the marketing, email and startup world. And one video consistently excited me about that world: the annual First Round Capital Holiday Video.
My favorite video (2013) was also my first. I started working for LiveIntent in 2013, late in the year and in the “old office” located at 291 Broadway. When directed to follow some employees to the “new space” at 100 Church Street for filming, I arrived to find a then salesperson and now Business Development Director, Mollie Garza, already dancing on a conference room table. I, myself, danced at the edges, using the excuse that I wished to stay out of the camera’s eye as a cover to scope out a new office not yet ready to be unveiled.
By 2014, we were in our new office for a year. It was a small place already packed with employees and we were desperately in need of additional space. Filming took place in an open area, past the wall that is located behind executive row. We danced around, unchoreographed and unsure of what to do. Our two chief executives saved the (creative) day when our CEO, Matt Keiser, came dressed as Hashman and CBO Jason Oates did a lithe snake dressed in a three-piece suit.
This year, we “went fancy” and were invited to film in a studio! We’re waiting for the filmed results but a little preview: Our CMO, Suneet Bhatt, paid homage to his daughter by styling his hair like Pebbles and a salesperson, David Amdur, dressed up as a shark. Those two elements, if anything, should guarantee an entertaining result! If you thought you saw me dancing in the back – no you didn’t, I wasn’t there!
Who are these people that send us into new spaces, dress us up in funny costumes and let us perform in boisterous holiday videos with music borrowed from the hottest pop songs of the moment? First Round Capital – our Series A, B and D investors. They are venture capitalists proven just as dedicated to “helping seed stage companies become the next big thing” as to making the very best holiday videos!
Both the advisory and financial help of such investors coupled with the hard work of the team and leadership provided by our executives has grown LiveIntent to almost 200 employees, with offices in Austin, Berlin, Copenhagen, Detroit and London. We have recently added two companies, their employees and technology to our family: Avari (Berlin) and Mojn (Copenhagen). LiveIntent works with over 750 publishers, and 450 brands to reach at least 117 million people every month.
It is thrilling to see the path from small startup to key player connecting brands to people unfold before us. As a company we – like our fellow First Round Capital startups Uber, AppNexus, Circulate, Birchbox – and Square and Mint before us – are developing great products and insights and stimulating the market. I couldn’t be more proud to be part of the First Round Capital community and more excited by the chance to be in the video. It’s my big break!
